Episode 43 — Review, Doom and Charity

Euphoria_0002Before we get to the games on the table this week we want to take a moment to let you know that from October 1st through October 8th we will be proud participants in the 2014 Stonemaier Charity Auction. Stonemaier Games will be auctioning off nine supreme copies of Euphoria, including extra bells and whistles like Game Trayz inserts, pairing each game with a different blogger/podcaster.

Each blogcaster will be choosing a charity which will receive at least 50% of the amount bid for that particular copy. The blogcaster with the largest amount bid will see the entire amount sent to it’s charity. The Charity we have chosen is the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation. The mission of this foundation is to ease suffering caused by mental illness, helping many who have fallen between the cracks. We encourage you to bid on this lovely game and support this work.

The auction link should be live sometime on October 1st. We have much more information about this on the podcast, and you can click the links above (or below) to find out even more. And keep an eye out for tweets to keep you updated as the week progresses.

We also get to some games, taking a first look at Spanish farming in La Granja and a full look at gun-fighting in the Doomtown corral. And we even discuss the reviewing of games in general, something sparked by recent reviews of a Kicstarter game called Lagoon. Follow the timeline below for all the goodness.

And So It Begins: The 2014 Game of Tournaments

unplacedworker0010It’s here.  Time to find out which game will win the Unplaced Worker in Punching Cardboard’s 2014 Game of Tournaments.  While there has been interest, we did not have enough offers to judge the games from real live humans, so we will assign each game to a playoff bound NHL team and let them decide the fate of board gaming as we know it.

After a lot of complex algorithms and random number rolls we have a final listing of games and the NHL teams that will represent them.  Here are the pairings:

Episode 16 — Too Long in the Wasteland: The Double Album Episode

Episode 16 — Too Long in the Wasteland: The Double Album Episode

agents_0016Firstly, we really like this episode and feel we were actually good this time out.  B, we apologize for the length as we were so busy being good that we ignored the timer we set to constrain ourselves. Well, not so much ignored the timer as spat right in its face.

In our longest episode to date (and hopefully ever) we announce our Game of Tournaments, review The Agents, and dissect the Kickstarter experience. We do a lot of dissection here.

So please enjoy our Scorsese director’s cut of a show and watch for our Game of Tournaments post announcing the 16 games that will be competing for the Unplaced Worker award.

Episode 10 — Intelligent Dice and Adorable Commodities

Euphoria_0056Jim loses his bet that we wouldn’t make it to episode 10.  We solve the mystery of the infamous Segway death.  And we discuss our first Kickstarter game, which propels us into a dystopian future that makes utopias look pretty lame.

Plus, we give Canadians heck for sending us their garbage musicians while keeping the good stuff for themselves.

Where else will you hear “the commodity tokens are adorable.”

Euphoria_0002

It’s that time of year.  Top 10 lists abound.  People pontificate. This is better than that and that is nowhere near as good as the other, all in order, from 1 – 10.

We decide that we too can count to ten, and make lists, but we like to be different.

So, our New Year’s Eve episode sees us taking on BGG contributor Sarah Reed’s challenge of playing 10 games 10 times each in 2014. We make individual lists (because it’s a list episode, and well, it’s just the thing to do) and then compare them in an utterly thrilling manner.

Unable to leave well enough alone, we add a special Punching Cardboard rule to the madness and count to 11. It all results in a what seems to be a very logical commitment: we decide to play our games.

Find our lists on our 10 x 10 page.  Feel Free to post your own 10 x 10 list in the comments section, and add a game from any other list for your plus one.
